Richard Hamilton (Medal of Honor)

Richard Hamilton was a United States Army soldier who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Vietnam War.

On August 18, 1969, serving as a Specialist Four with the 1st Platoon, Company L, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry, 196th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, near Cu Chi, Republic of Vietnam, Hamilton distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action. While serving as a machine gunner on a search and destroy mission, his platoon was ambushed by a large, well-entrenched enemy force. With complete disregard for his safety, Hamilton stood up in his exposed position and poured devastating fire into the enemy ranks, suppressing their fire and allowing his comrades to maneuver to a more advantageous position.

Realizing that his exposed position drew heavy enemy fire, Hamilton left the relative safety of his position and began a systematic search of the area for wounded men. He repeatedly braved intense enemy fire to carry wounded soldiers to safety. After all of the wounded had been evacuated, Hamilton returned to his position and continued to provide suppressive fire until the enemy was routed.

For his extraordinary heroism, Hamilton was awarded the Medal of Honor. His actions saved the lives of numerous fellow soldiers and contributed significantly to the success of the mission. His Medal of Honor citation details the specifics of his bravery and dedication to duty.
