Yoko gake
Yoko gake is a judo throw, categorized as a side sacrifice technique (Yoko-sutemiwaza). In Yoko gake, the tori (throwing person) sacrifices their own balance and falls to the side to bring the uke (receiving person) down.
The technique involves the tori initiating a forward momentum towards the uke, then stepping to the side and using a reaping action with one of their legs against the uke's leg (typically the inside of the uke's leg). Simultaneously, the tori pulls on the uke's upper body to disrupt their balance and facilitate the throw. The tori lands on their side, ideally with the uke landing on their back.
Yoko gake is considered a relatively high-risk technique, as the tori is sacrificing their balance and potentially exposing themselves to being countered if the throw is not executed properly. Because of this, proficiency requires a good understanding of timing, balance breaking (kuzushi), and body positioning. It can be an effective technique when applied correctly, particularly against an opponent who is off-balance or over-committed in their own attack.
