Aho's research has focused on areas such as compiler design, data structures and algorithms, database systems, and programming language theory. He is particularly well-known for his co-authorship of several influential textbooks, including "The Design and Analysis of Computer Algorithms" (with John Hopcroft and Jeffrey Ullman), "Compilers: Principles, Techniques, and Tools" (often referred to as the "Dragon Book," also with Ravi Sethi and Jeffrey Ullman), and "Data Structures and Algorithms" (with Jeffrey Ullman and Alfred V. Aho).

These textbooks are widely used in computer science education and have significantly shaped the field. His work has influenced the development of numerous programming languages and software systems.

Aho received his B.Eng.Phys. from the University of Toronto and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science from Princeton University.
