RM Instow

RM Instow was a Royal Marines training establishment located in North Devon, England. It operated for several decades, primarily focusing on amphibious warfare training and specialized courses for Royal Marines personnel.

The facility was situated on the River Torridge estuary near the village of Instow, offering a suitable environment for conducting boat handling, landing craft operations, and other waterborne exercises. The tidal nature of the estuary provided realistic conditions mirroring various operational environments.

Training at RM Instow encompassed a wide range of skills, including navigation, beach reconnaissance, assault landings, and the use of various types of landing craft and small boats. It served as a crucial stepping stone for Royal Marines preparing for deployments worldwide.

The site also hosted courses for other military units and allied forces, contributing to interoperability and shared understanding of amphibious tactics.

RM Instow closed in the late 1990s as part of wider restructuring within the Royal Marines. The site has since been redeveloped for other purposes. While no longer an active military establishment, its history remains a significant part of the Royal Marines' heritage and training evolution.
