Llanbedr
Llanbedr is a village and community in Gwynedd, Wales. It is situated on the A496 road, approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Barmouth and forms part of the historic county of Merionethshire.
The name "Llanbedr" is Welsh and translates to "Church of Saint Peter". This likely refers to the village's parish church, typically dedicated to Saint Peter. As with many place names in Wales starting with "Llan," it signifies a religious foundation.
Llanbedr is a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to the coast, the mountains of Snowdonia National Park, and various attractions such as the nearby Shell Island (Shell Island is actually on the other side of the Artro estuary near Mochras/Morfa Bychan, not directly in Llanbedr). The area offers opportunities for walking, cycling, birdwatching, and other outdoor activities.
The village itself has a range of amenities, including shops, pubs, and restaurants, catering to both locals and tourists. The Artro river flows through Llanbedr.
Historically, Llanbedr, like much of rural Wales, was primarily an agricultural area. The development of tourism has become a significant part of the local economy in recent decades.
The community of Llanbedr includes not only the village itself but also surrounding hamlets and rural areas. Local government is administered through Gwynedd Council.
