List of members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles (LDS Church)
The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is one of the presiding high councils in the leadership structure of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Members of this quorum are considered apostles, holding the keys of the priesthood necessary to direct the work of the Church throughout the world.
Selection and Role:
Members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles are chosen by the President of the Church, who receives what the Church believes to be divine revelation in the selection process. Generally, those called have demonstrated long-standing dedication to the Church and possess a strong testimony of its doctrines. New apostles are ordained to the apostleship by the President of the Church or another apostle delegated by him.
The primary role of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is to be special witnesses of Jesus Christ throughout the world. They assist the First Presidency in governing the Church, setting policy, and overseeing its various activities. They travel extensively, speaking to members of the Church and the general public. They also participate in the dedication of temples and other significant Church events.
Succession:
When a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles dies or is released (usually to serve in the First Presidency), a new apostle is called to fill the vacancy. The new apostle is then ordained, assuming the full responsibilities and authority of the office. Seniority within the Quorum is determined by the date of ordination to the apostleship, not by age. The apostle with the longest continuous service as a member of the Quorum is designated as the Acting President of the Quorum. This individual presides over Quorum meetings and assumes additional responsibilities in the event of the death or incapacity of the President of the Church. Upon the death of the President of the Church, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, under the direction of the Acting President, becomes the presiding body of the Church until a new First Presidency is organized. The Acting President of the Quorum is typically called as the new President of the Church.
Current and Historical Members:
The list of members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is a historical record of the individuals who have served in this important leadership position since the organization of the Church in 1830. These individuals have included prominent figures in Church history, such as Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, and many others who have contributed significantly to the growth and development of the LDS Church. A comprehensive list of all past and present members can be found on the official website of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The composition of the Quorum is dynamic and reflects the ongoing leadership needs of the global church.
