Pan Podstoli

Pan Podstoli was a courtly title in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was a lower-ranking official position compared to the Podkomorzy (Chamberlain) or Podkanclerzy (Vice-Chancellor). "Pan" simply means "Mister" or "Lord" in Polish, and "Podstoli" (derived from stół, meaning table) literally translates to "Under-Tableman" or "Sub-Steward."

The primary responsibility of the Podstoli was initially to serve at the royal or noble table. Over time, the position evolved into a more symbolic role within the court hierarchy. While the actual serving function diminished, the Podstoli still held a position of honor and influence. The office was often a stepping stone to higher positions within the Commonwealth's administration.

The title existed at both the central (royal court) and local (regional) levels. Therefore, there would be a Podstoli Koronny (Crown Podstoli) serving the King and a Podstoli within various voivodeships (provinces). The scope of responsibilities and importance varied depending on the location and the specific court.

The office of Podstoli was abolished along with other Commonwealth titles following the partitions of Poland in the late 18th century. However, the term remains recognizable in historical literature and discussions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
