USS Diploma (AM-221)
The USS Diploma (AM-221) was an Auk-class minesweeper acquired by the U.S. Navy for the dangerous task of removing mines from minefields laid in the path of invading forces. Diploma served in the Pacific Ocean during World War II.
Commissioned in 1944, Diploma conducted minesweeping operations in support of numerous landings. She participated in operations at Okinawa and other Pacific locales, enduring frequent enemy air attacks. Her duties involved clearing harbors and shipping lanes, ensuring safe passage for naval and merchant vessels.
After the war, Diploma continued to serve in the Pacific, participating in post-war mine clearance operations in Japanese waters. This involved neutralizing the significant number of mines laid by both sides during the conflict.
Decommissioned after the war, USS Diploma was eventually struck from the Navy list.
