Bargylia

Bargylia was an ancient city located in Caria, a region in southwestern Anatolia (modern-day Turkey). It was situated on the coast, near the modern town of Boğaziçi.

History: Bargylia, according to tradition, was founded by Bellerophon, the hero of Greek mythology, who named it after his friend, Bargylos, who was killed by Pegasus' kick. The city became a member of the Delian League in the 5th century BC, paying tribute to Athens. It later fell under Persian control before being liberated by Alexander the Great. During the Hellenistic period, Bargylia experienced a period of prosperity and autonomy. It became part of the Roman province of Asia after the Roman conquest.

Archaeology: The site of Bargylia is still largely unexcavated. Visible remains include sections of the city walls, a temple dedicated to Artemis, and fragments of other structures. The area has yielded inscriptions and pottery, providing insights into the city's history and culture.

Significance: While not as prominent as some other ancient cities in Caria, Bargylia played a role in the political and economic landscape of the region. Its strategic coastal location made it important for trade and defense. The city's association with Greek mythology and its later Romanization illustrate the cultural influences that shaped its identity.
