HNLMS Piet Hein (1894)

HNLMS Piet Hein was a Dutch Evertsen-class armored turret ship built in the late 19th century. She was named after the famous Dutch admiral Piet Hein. The ship was constructed by the Fijenoord shipyard in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Piet Hein and her sister ships, HNLMS Evertsen and HNLMS Kortenaer, were designed primarily for coastal defense and colonial service in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). They represented a significant step in Dutch naval shipbuilding, although by the early 20th century, they were considered outdated compared to more modern battleships and cruisers.

The ship was armed with two 21 cm (8.3 inch) guns in a single turret, along with smaller caliber guns for secondary armament. She also had torpedo tubes. Her armor protection was relatively thick for ships of her type and era.

Throughout her career, Piet Hein served primarily in the Netherlands and in the Dutch East Indies. She participated in various naval exercises and patrols. By the start of World War I, she was considered largely obsolete and was relegated to secondary roles. She was eventually decommissioned and scrapped.
