Mark Twain Memorial Bridge (1936)

The Mark Twain Memorial Bridge, completed in 1936, is a historic bridge spanning the Mississippi River at Hannibal, Missouri. It carries U.S. Route 36 and provides a vital transportation link between Missouri and Illinois. The bridge is a steel cantilever truss structure, notable for its distinctive Warren truss design with vertical members. It was named in honor of Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, who was born and raised in Hannibal. The 1936 bridge replaced an earlier pontoon bridge at the same location, significantly improving traffic flow and safety. The bridge served as a major transportation artery for decades. In 2000, a new Mark Twain Memorial Bridge was constructed adjacent to the 1936 bridge, carrying the majority of traffic. The original 1936 bridge remains standing and is currently used for local traffic and pedestrian access, preserving a significant piece of Hannibal's history and engineering heritage. Maintenance and preservation efforts are ongoing to ensure the longevity of the historic structure.
