464 BC

464 BC was a year in the pre-Julian Roman calendar. In the Roman Republic, it was known as the Year of the Consulship of Albinus and Fusus (or, less frequently, year 290 Ab urbe condita).

Events

  • A major earthquake struck Sparta, causing significant damage and loss of life. This disaster was followed by a Helot revolt, known as the Third Messenian War, which greatly weakened Sparta.
  • Cimon, a prominent Athenian statesman and general, led an Athenian expedition to help Sparta suppress the Helot revolt. However, the Spartan government, distrustful of Athens' intentions, dismissed the Athenian forces. This event strained relations between Athens and Sparta and contributed to the eventual outbreak of the Peloponnesian War.
