José Ortiz (jockey)
José Ortiz (born November 19, 1993) is a Puerto Rican jockey who competes in American Thoroughbred horse racing. He is the younger brother of fellow jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.
Ortiz began his riding career in Puerto Rico at Hipódromo Camarero in 2011. He moved to the United States in 2012, initially riding at Parx Racing near Philadelphia. His career quickly progressed, and he began competing regularly at major tracks in New York.
Ortiz has won numerous prestigious races throughout his career, including the Belmont Stakes in 2017 aboard Tapwrit, the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2019 aboard Vino Rosso, and the Kentucky Oaks in 2023 aboard Pretty Mischievous. He has consistently ranked among the leading jockeys in North America, both in terms of wins and earnings. His riding style is characterized by patience and a strong understanding of pace. He has earned multiple Eclipse Awards, recognizing him as one of the top jockeys in the United States.
