James Tien (politician)
James Tien Pei-chun, GBS, JP (田北俊) (born 17 January 1947) is a Hong Kong businessman and former politician. He was a member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong (LegCo), representing the Commercial (First) functional constituency, from 1993 to 2012. He served as chairman of the Liberal Party from 1998 to 2004 and again from 2008 to 2016.
Tien's business interests are primarily in the textile and garment industry. He is the chairman of Manhattan Garments, a major clothing manufacturer and retailer.
In politics, Tien was known for his pro-business stance and his often critical voice towards the Hong Kong government, particularly under the leadership of Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa. He famously resigned from the Executive Council in 2003 in opposition to the government's handling of Article 23 legislation, contributing significantly to the withdrawal of the bill.
He lost his LegCo seat in the 2012 election, defeated by Jeffrey Lam. Following his defeat, he remained active in public discourse, often commenting on political and economic issues in Hong Kong. His brother, Michael Tien, is also a prominent businessman and politician in Hong Kong.
