Chemo (character)
Chemo is a fictional supervillain appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. He is a sentient, amorphous blob of toxic waste created from byproducts of various scientific experiments. Chemo is generally depicted as a massive, virtually indestructible entity with no inherent intelligence beyond a primal desire to spread destruction and disease.
Publication History
Chemo first appeared in Showcase #39 (April 1962) and was created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Ross Andru. He was initially a one-off villain created to pose a threat to the Metal Men.
Fictional Character Biography
Chemo was created when Professor Ramsey Norton dumped a collection of failed chemical experiments into a special plastic container he'd invented. Over time, the chemicals reacted and evolved, gaining sentience and breaking free of its container. The resulting creature, Chemo, possesses immense size and strength and is composed of a variety of hazardous substances.
Chemo's most notable appearance involved being launched as a living missile towards Metropolis, resulting in the destruction of a significant portion of the city and the death of Superman's love interest, Lois Lane (temporarily, as she was later resurrected). This event, depicted in the Superman comic books, is a significant moment in Superman's history and is often referenced in discussions of Chemo's destructive potential.
Powers and Abilities
- Superhuman Strength: Chemo possesses immense physical strength, capable of easily overpowering most opponents.
- Invulnerability: Chemo's body is highly resistant to physical harm, making him difficult to injure or destroy.
- Toxicity: Chemo's body is composed of various toxic and hazardous substances, making him a danger to anyone who comes into close contact with him. He can release these toxins to further harm his surroundings.
- Size Alteration: While generally depicted as a massive creature, Chemo's size can vary depending on the circumstances.
- Regeneration: Chemo can regenerate lost mass, making him difficult to permanently defeat.
Weaknesses
Chemo, despite his formidable powers, has a few weaknesses. Containing him in a specially designed vessel is one method of neutralising his threat. Disrupting his chemical composition with specific counter-agents has also been shown to be effective in some storylines.
In Other Media
Chemo has made appearances in various animated television series and video games, often portrayed as a powerful, albeit mindless, force of destruction.
