Maple Island (Lake Superior)
Maple Island is a small, uninhabited island located in Lake Superior, within the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. It is part of Ashland County, Wisconsin. The island is characterized by its rocky shoreline and dense boreal forest dominated, predictably, by maple trees, along with other species typical of the region. Its location within the National Lakeshore protects the island from development and ensures its preservation in a relatively natural state. While not a prominent destination compared to some of the larger Apostle Islands, Maple Island offers opportunities for kayakers and boaters to explore its shoreline and observe the surrounding lake ecosystem, subject to National Park Service regulations and safety guidelines. Information about the island's specific flora, fauna, or history is relatively limited in publicly accessible sources compared to other islands in the archipelago. It is primarily significant as a component of the broader Apostle Islands ecosystem and scenic landscape.
