Las Marías (Santurce)
Las Marías is a sector or neighborhood located within Santurce, a district of San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is characterized as a primarily residential area, although commercial establishments and service businesses are also present. The boundaries of Las Marías are not officially defined, leading to some ambiguity; however, it is generally understood to be situated in the southwestern portion of Santurce, bordering other Santurce sectors like Machuchal and adjacent to the municipality of Guaynabo.
The sector's name, "Las Marías," is plural, referring to "the Marys" in Spanish. The origin of the name is uncertain, with possible explanations ranging from prominent residents named María to a reference to religious figures. Historical records do not definitively clarify the etymology.
Las Marías, like much of Santurce, experienced significant urban development throughout the 20th century. It consists of a mix of housing types, including single-family homes, apartment buildings, and public housing projects. Over time, challenges related to infrastructure, crime, and economic opportunities have impacted the sector, similar to other urban areas in Puerto Rico. Local community organizations and government initiatives have worked to address these challenges and improve the quality of life for residents. Due to its location within Santurce, residents of Las Marías have access to the broader resources and amenities of San Juan, including hospitals, universities, cultural institutions, and entertainment venues.
