Kakusei (Go)
Kakusei (覚醒) in the context of the game of Go refers to a sudden and significant improvement in a player's strength, often occurring after a period of plateau or stagnant progress. It can be likened to a "breakthrough" or "awakening" in understanding the game. This improvement is typically characterized by a noticeable increase in strategic and tactical acumen, leading to more consistent and powerful play.
A Kakusei experience often involves a deeper comprehension of fundamental Go principles, such as shape, territory, influence, and endgame strategy. It may also be triggered by exposure to new learning materials, intensive study of professional games, or simply a period of focused practice. Unlike gradual improvement, Kakusei suggests a more rapid and dramatic shift in skill level.
The term is used informally within the Go community to describe this phenomenon, often discussed in online forums, Go clubs, and amongst players analyzing their own or others' progress. While difficult to quantify objectively, the occurrence of Kakusei is generally recognized and acknowledged by experienced Go players. It’s often associated with a change in how a player approaches the game, leading to more insightful moves and a clearer understanding of the board situation. The "awakening" can be temporary or permanent, dependent on continued practice and learning.
