KlezKamp
KlezKamp was an annual music and cultural retreat dedicated to the celebration, study, and performance of klezmer music and Ashkenazi Jewish culture. Founded by Henry Sapoznik in 1985, it became a central gathering place for musicians, dancers, scholars, and enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds interested in exploring this vibrant art form.
The week-long program typically included intensive workshops in instrumental technique (clarinet, trumpet, trombone, accordion, violin, etc.), vocal performance, Yiddish language, traditional dance (especially hora and freylekhs), and the historical and cultural context of klezmer music. Leading klezmer musicians from around the world served as instructors and performers, offering masterclasses and concerts.
KlezKamp was known for its immersive environment, fostering a strong sense of community among participants. Evenings were often filled with informal jam sessions, dance parties, and cultural events. It played a significant role in the klezmer revival of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, providing a space for both seasoned professionals and aspiring newcomers to learn from each other and advance the tradition.
After a hiatus, KlezKamp was revived under new leadership.
