Cathbad
Cathbad (also spelled Cathbhadh) was a prominent druid in the Ulster Cycle of Irish mythology. He served as chief druid in the court of King Conchobar mac Nessa of Ulster, and is known for his prophecies and wise counsel.
Cathbad's most famous prophecy concerns the birth of Deirdre. When Conchobar's druids were celebrating the imminent birth of Fedlimid mac Daill's daughter, Cathbad prophesied that the child would be of surpassing beauty but would bring destruction and sorrow to Ulster's greatest warriors.
He is also credited with giving Cú Chulainn his name. Originally known as Setanta, the young hero overheard Cathbad prophesying that any warrior who took up arms on that day would achieve great fame but would have a short life. Setanta immediately seized weapons and thus became Cú Chulainn, "Culann's Hound."
Cathbad is portrayed as a figure of great wisdom and power, consulted on important matters and possessing the ability to foretell the future. He often advises Conchobar on matters of state and plays a crucial role in shaping the events of the Ulster Cycle. His prophecies, while often foreboding, highlight the themes of fate and heroism that are central to Irish mythology.
