Century (automobile)

The Buick Century was a mid-size car produced by Buick from 1936 to 1942, and then again from 1954 to 1958, and finally from 1973 to 2005. Over its long run, it went through several major redesigns and platform changes, evolving significantly in size, style, and market positioning.

The original Century, introduced in 1936, was known for its performance, being one of the first Buicks capable of reaching 100 mph, hence the name "Century." This initial iteration ran until 1942 when automobile production was halted due to World War II.

The Century name was revived in 1954, again emphasizing performance. This second generation lasted until 1958.

The most enduring iteration of the Buick Century began in 1973. This version represented a significant shift to a more mainstream, family-oriented mid-size car. Throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, the Century was a popular choice for its practicality, reliability, and affordability. It underwent various styling updates and mechanical improvements during this period.

The final generation of the Buick Century, produced from 1997 to 2005, was a relatively conservative sedan aimed at value-conscious buyers. It was eventually replaced by the Buick LaCrosse. The Century's long production run underscores its historical importance and popularity as a staple of the Buick lineup for many decades.
