Galloway and Upper Nithsdale (UK Parliament constituency)

Galloway and Upper Nithsdale was a county constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elected one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first-past-the-post system. It existed from 1983 until 2005.

The constituency was created in 1983 from parts of the former Galloway and Dumfries constituencies. It covered the western part of Dumfries and Galloway council area. Key towns within the constituency included Castle Douglas, Newton Stewart, Moffat, and Thornhill.

The seat was abolished for the 2005 general election, with its territory being largely incorporated into the Dumfries and Galloway constituency. A smaller portion in the east was transferred to the Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale constituency.

The MPs who represented Galloway and Upper Nithsdale were:

  • Ian Lang (Conservative): 1983-1997
  • Alasdair Morgan (Scottish National Party): 1997-2001
  • Peter Duncan (Conservative): 2001-2005

The constituency generally saw a Conservative majority, although the Scottish National Party gained the seat in the 1997 Labour landslide. The Conservatives subsequently regained the seat in 2001.
