Sabaton (band)
Sabaton is a Swedish power metal band formed in Falun in 1999. The band's main lyrical themes are historical battles and wars. They are known for their energetic live performances and distinct sound, often incorporating keyboards and choir-like vocals to create an epic and theatrical atmosphere.
History
Sabaton was formed in 1999 by vocalist Joakim Brodén, bassist Pär Sundström, and drummer Richard Larsson, along with guitarists Oskar Montelius and Rikard Sundén. After recording several demos, they signed with Italian label Underground Symphony in 2002. However, the label went bankrupt before their debut album could be released. They later signed with Black Lodge, a subsidiary of Sound Pollution, in 2005 and released their debut album Primo Victoria.
The band went through several lineup changes over the years. In 2012, four members – guitarists Oskar Montelius and Rikard Sundén, drummer Daniel Mullback, and keyboardist Daniel Mÿhr – left the band. They were replaced by Chris Rörland and Thobbe Englund on guitars and Robban Bäck on drums. Hannes van Dahl replaced Robban Bäck in 2013. Thobbe Englund left in 2016 and was replaced by Tommy Johansson.
Musical Style and Influences
Sabaton's musical style is generally classified as power metal, though they often incorporate elements of heavy metal and symphonic metal. Their music is characterized by fast tempos, powerful vocals, and anthemic choruses. Joakim Brodén's distinctive gravelly voice is a key element of their sound.
Lyrically, Sabaton focuses almost exclusively on historical warfare, battles, and military heroes. They often research their subjects extensively to ensure accuracy and respect in their storytelling. Notable lyrical themes include World War I, World War II, and various other conflicts throughout history.
The band cites Iron Maiden, Accept, and Judas Priest as major influences on their music.
