Stilbe (plant)
Stilbe is a genus of flowering plants in the Stilbaceae family. The genus is endemic to South Africa. Stilbe species are typically evergreen shrubs or small trees, characterized by their ericoid (heather-like) foliage and relatively small, often tubular, flowers.
Description
Stilbe species are generally woody plants with small, narrow leaves that are often closely pressed against the stems, an adaptation to the dry conditions of their native habitats. The flowers are usually borne in dense clusters or spikes at the ends of branches. Flower colors range from white and pink to purple. The fruit is a small capsule containing numerous seeds.
Distribution and Habitat
Stilbe is confined to South Africa, primarily found in the Western Cape province. They are often associated with fynbos vegetation, a fire-prone shrubland ecosystem characterized by nutrient-poor soils.
Taxonomy
The genus Stilbe belongs to the family Stilbaceae. The classification of Stilbaceae and its constituent genera has undergone revision based on molecular phylogenetic studies.
Ecology
Stilbe species play a role in the fynbos ecosystem. They provide habitat and food resources for various insects and other animals. The seeds are dispersed by wind or animals.
Cultivation
Some Stilbe species are cultivated as ornamental plants, particularly in regions with Mediterranean climates. They require well-drained soil and full sun. Propagation is typically by seed or cuttings.
