Tarifa

Tarifa is a town and municipality in the province of Cádiz, Andalusia, Spain. It is strategically located on the southernmost point of mainland Europe, where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Geography and Climate: Tarifa is known for its strong winds, primarily the Levante (from the east) and the Poniente (from the west). These winds make it a popular destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing. The town is situated approximately 100 km south of Cádiz and 30 km across the Strait of Gibraltar from Morocco. History: Tarifa has a rich history, influenced by its strategic location. It was originally a Roman settlement known as Julia Traducta. Later, it came under Visigothic rule. In 710 AD, it was the landing point for the first Berber troops initiating the Umayyad conquest of Hispania, led by Tarif ibn Malik, from whom the town derives its name. The Guzmán el Bueno Castle, a prominent landmark, dates back to the 10th century and played a crucial role in defending the town against invasions. Tarifa was officially incorporated into the Crown of Castile in the 13th century.
