Konglong (恐龙)

Definition:

Konglong (恐龙), meaning "terrible dragon" or "fearful dragon," is the Chinese word for dinosaur. It refers to a diverse group of reptiles of the clade Dinosauria that first appeared during the Triassic period. Dinosaurs were the dominant terrestrial vertebrates for over 135 million years, from the late Triassic (about 230 million years ago) until the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event (about 66 million years ago), after which most dinosaur groups died out.

Etymology:

The term konglong is a calque, or loan translation, from the English word "dinosaur." The "terrible" or "fearful" component (恐 - kong) reflects the initial perceptions of dinosaurs based on the large and impressive fossil remains discovered in the 19th century.
