Aron (bishop of Kraków)

Aron (died c. 1059) was the first known Bishop of Kraków. His historical existence is documented, though details of his life and episcopate are scarce. He is believed to have been of German or Lotharingian origin, possibly arriving in Poland with Mieszko II Lambert or shortly thereafter.

Aron's episcopate is generally dated from around 1046 until his death, although some sources propose earlier dates. He is considered to have played a significant role in the re-establishment of the Kraków diocese after a period of disruption following the pagan reaction and internal conflicts within Poland in the 1030s.

He is sometimes referred to as a Benedictine monk, although evidence to support this is limited. He is traditionally associated with the founding of the Benedictine abbey in Tyniec, near Kraków, which further supported the revitalization of the Church in the region. While the precise role of Aron in the abbey's founding remains debated by historians, it signifies his commitment to religious life and institution-building.

Aron's significance lies in his role as a pivotal figure in the early history of the Kraków diocese and the re-establishment of Christianity in the Polish lands during the 11th century. He is venerated as a blessed in the Roman Catholic Church, with his feast day celebrated on February 8th.
