Last Hope (TV series)
Last Hope, also known as Juushinki Pandora (重神機パンドーラ, Jūshinki Pandora, lit. "Heavy Divine Machine Pandora"), is a Japanese-Chinese science fiction anime television series created by Shoji Kawamori. It was produced by Satelight and Xiamen Skyloong Media. The series premiered in Japan on Tokyo MX and Netflix in spring 2018, with later broadcasts on other Japanese networks.
The story is set in a dystopian future where an experimental energy device malfunctions, triggering a global ecological disaster known as the "Xianglong Crisis." The crisis leads to the rapid evolution of mechanical and biological life forms, creating monstrous "BRIs" (Biological Revolutionary of Immortality). The series follows the struggles of Leon Lau, a brilliant scientist ostracized for his role in the disaster, and Chloe Lau, a young woman with mysterious powers, as they fight against the BRIs and uncover the secrets behind the Xianglong Crisis while living in a fortified settlement known as Neo Xianglong.
The series blends mecha action with themes of survival, technological advancement, and the relationship between humanity and nature. The mecha designs are a prominent feature, reflecting Shoji Kawamori's signature style known from works like Macross and Aquarion. The story explores the consequences of unchecked scientific progress and the need for cooperation in the face of overwhelming adversity. The series is notable for its international co-production aspect and its attempt to cater to both Japanese and Chinese audiences.
