Boakai

Joseph Nyumah Boakai (born November 30, 1944) is a Liberian politician who served as the 26th President of Liberia from January 2024 to present. Prior to his presidency, he served as the 29th Vice President of Liberia from 2006 to 2018, under President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Boakai was born in Waysua, Lofa County. He pursued his education, earning a degree in agriculture from the University of Liberia. Before entering national politics, he held various positions in the private and public sectors, including serving as Minister of Agriculture under President Samuel Doe and as managing director of the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC).

In 2005, he was selected as the running mate of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on the Unity Party ticket. Together, they won the presidential election, and Boakai served two terms as Vice President. During his time as Vice President, he focused on initiatives related to agriculture, infrastructure development, and national reconciliation.

Boakai ran for President in 2017, losing to George Weah. He contested the presidency again in 2023, ultimately defeating Weah in a runoff election. His campaign platform focused on promises of good governance, economic revitalization, and improved infrastructure.

His administration's stated goals include combating corruption, attracting foreign investment, improving healthcare and education, and promoting national unity.
