Chorzałki

Chorzałki are a type of traditional Polish cookie, specifically a type of fried pastry. They are thin, crispy, and often dusted with powdered sugar. The dough is typically made from flour, eggs, sugar, and a small amount of spirit (such as rum or vodka), which helps to prevent the pastry from absorbing too much oil during frying and also contributes to its characteristic blistered texture. The dough is rolled out very thinly, cut into strips or ribbons, and then formed into characteristic shapes, often resembling ribbons or bow ties, before being deep-fried until golden brown. Chorzałki are particularly popular during the pre-Lenten period (Karnawał) and are similar to other fried pastries found in Central and Eastern European cuisines, such as angel wings or faworki.
