Ip, Sălaj

Ip is a commune in Sălaj County, Romania. It is located in the northwestern part of the country. The commune is composed of seven villages: Ip (the commune center), Cosniciu de Jos, Cosniciu de Sus, Halmășd, Luțca, Pădureni, and Zăuan.

The commune is primarily an agricultural area. Its history is marked by the Ip massacre, which occurred in September 1940, where numerous Romanian civilians were killed by Hungarian soldiers and civilians following the Second Vienna Award, which transferred Northern Transylvania to Hungary.

The name "Ip" is of uncertain origin but is believed to have connections to older regional place names. Sălaj County, in which Ip is located, has a rich history dating back to Roman times, with evidence of Dacian settlements predating Roman rule.
