York East (provincial electoral district)
York East was a provincial electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that existed at various times between 1867 and 1999. Located in the eastern portion of York County, it generally encompassed the eastern part of what is now the Regional Municipality of York.
The riding was first created for the 1867 election, coinciding with Confederation. It was abolished in 1926 and redistributed into other ridings. The riding was re-established in 1934 and continued until 1967. It was created again in 1987 and was eliminated in 1999, being redistributed into other ridings as part of an electoral boundary redistribution exercise.
Throughout its existence, York East experienced significant demographic shifts, evolving from a predominantly rural agricultural area to a suburban region undergoing rapid growth. As such, its political representation shifted over time, reflecting the changing concerns and priorities of its constituents. The riding was known to be a bellwether riding at times, electing members from various political parties depending on the prevailing political climate in the province.
Historical election results and lists of Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) who represented the riding are available from the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and Elections Ontario.
