Primary Colours (The Horrors album)
Primary Colours is the second studio album by English rock band The Horrors, released on 20 April 2009 by XL Recordings. The album marked a significant departure from the band's previous garage rock sound, embracing a more experimental and post-punk influenced style.
Produced by Geoff Barrow of Portishead, along with The Horrors themselves, Primary Colours incorporates elements of krautrock, shoegaze, and noise rock, creating a darker, more atmospheric sound than their debut album, Strange House. Key influences cited by the band included Suicide, Neu!, and The Jesus and Mary Chain.
The album received widespread critical acclaim upon its release and is often regarded as a pivotal moment in The Horrors' career, solidifying their reputation as a band willing to evolve and experiment. It was noted for its innovative use of synthesizers, layered textures, and more introspective lyrical themes. Primary Colours was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2009.
Singles released from Primary Colours include "Sea Within a Sea" and "Who Can Say." The album reached number 25 on the UK Albums Chart. Its influence can be heard in the subsequent work of numerous indie and alternative rock bands.
