SS Cufic (1888)
The SS Cufic was a passenger and cargo steamship built in 1888 by Harland and Wolff of Belfast for the White Star Line. She was primarily employed on the White Star Line's Liverpool to New York route, carrying both passengers and freight. As a 'cattle boat,' she was also heavily involved in transporting livestock across the Atlantic.
The Cufic was one of a group of similar ships built for White Star, designed to provide a more economical service than the line's express liners. These ships prioritized cargo capacity, particularly for livestock, but still offered accommodation for passengers, typically in steerage or third class.
She was eventually sold in 1901 to the Dominion Line and renamed the Manitou. Under Dominion Line ownership, she continued to operate on the North Atlantic routes, though her specific routes may have changed. Her career eventually ended with her being scrapped in 1922.
