Deolali

Deolali is a cantonment town in the Nashik district of Maharashtra, India. It is located approximately 16 kilometers (9.9 miles) east of Nashik city.

Historically, Deolali served as a British military camp and sanatorium, primarily due to its perceived dry climate and elevation, which were considered beneficial for the health of soldiers and officers. The town became a significant center for military training and convalescence during the British Raj.

Deolali is also known for its mental asylum, the Central Mental Hospital, one of the oldest such institutions in India.

The term "doolally tap," a British slang term for mental instability or insanity, is popularly believed to have originated from the experiences of British soldiers stationed in Deolali, who allegedly experienced mental health issues due to the climate, isolation, or other factors. While the etymology is widely cited, some debate exists about its definitive origin.

Deolali's economy is largely driven by the presence of the Indian Army and related services, as well as the Central Mental Hospital. Small-scale commerce and agriculture also contribute to the local economy.
