Enzo Dara
Enzo Dara (October 13, 1938 – August 25, 2017) was an Italian operatic bass. He was particularly renowned for his comedic roles in operas by Rossini, Donizetti, and Mozart.
Born in Mantua, Dara studied at the Mantua Conservatory. He made his professional debut in 1960 in L'elisir d'amore in Mantua. He quickly gained recognition for his comedic talent and vocal agility.
Dara possessed a distinctive, almost baritonal bass voice and a natural flair for acting, making him a favorite among audiences and conductors. His repertoire included such roles as Don Bartolo in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola, Dulcamara in L'elisir d'amore, and Don Pasquale in Don Pasquale. He also performed roles in operas by Verdi, Puccini, and others.
He performed at many of the world's leading opera houses, including La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House, and the Vienna State Opera. He made numerous recordings, many of which are considered definitive interpretations of his signature roles.
Enzo Dara's performances were characterized by his impeccable diction, precise timing, and ability to bring humor and humanity to his characters. He is remembered as one of the greatest comedic basses of his generation.
