Basil Hamilton

Basil Hamilton was a British Army officer and colonial administrator. He is primarily known for his role as the Governor of Newfoundland from 1934 to 1936, during the period of Commission of Government.

Hamilton was appointed to the governorship following Newfoundland's financial crisis and the relinquishment of responsible government in 1934. The Commission of Government, appointed by the British government, was tasked with managing the colony's finances and administration until it could become self-sufficient again. As Governor, Hamilton presided over the Commission and implemented various policies aimed at economic recovery and social reform. These policies included streamlining government services, promoting resource development (particularly in fisheries and forestry), and improving public health and education.

His tenure as Governor was marked by both successes and challenges. While the Commission made progress in stabilizing Newfoundland's finances and improving infrastructure, it also faced criticism for its top-down approach and lack of local accountability. Hamilton's role was to balance the need for efficient administration with the desire to engage with the Newfoundland population.
