Ministry of Women (Brazil)

The Ministry of Women (Portuguese: Ministério das Mulheres) is a cabinet-level federal ministry of the Brazilian government responsible for policies related to women's rights and gender equality. It is tasked with promoting policies aimed at combating violence against women, increasing women's participation in politics and the workforce, and reducing gender-based discrimination.

The Ministry has undergone several changes in name and structure throughout its history, reflecting shifts in political priorities and government organization. It was originally established in 2003 as the Special Secretariat for Women's Policies (Secretaria Especial de Políticas para as Mulheres – SPM). It was elevated to ministerial status in 2015, but its existence and prominence have fluctuated depending on the administration in power. In some periods, its functions were absorbed into other ministries.

The current mandate of the Ministry of Women generally includes developing and implementing national policies for women, coordinating government programs related to women's issues, promoting gender equality in all areas of public life, and advocating for women's rights at the national and international levels. It works in collaboration with other government agencies, civil society organizations, and international bodies to achieve its goals. Specific responsibilities often include addressing issues such as domestic violence, sexual harassment, maternal health, and women's economic empowerment. The specific structure and portfolio of the Ministry are subject to change depending on the current government's priorities.
