USS Gear

The USS Gear was a Clemson-class destroyer in the United States Navy. Commissioned in 1919, she served actively in the period between World War I and World War II. Her duties during this time primarily involved patrol, fleet exercises, and training operations. As part of Destroyer Division 27, she operated extensively in the Atlantic and Caribbean.

During World War II, USS Gear performed convoy escort duty, protecting merchant shipping from German U-boats. She also participated in anti-submarine patrols. Notably, USS Gear was sunk on August 9, 1943, by the German submarine U-155 in the Caribbean Sea, resulting in significant casualties among her crew. The wreck site is a designated war grave.
