Devil's Peak (novel)
Devil's Peak is a crime thriller novel written by Deon Meyer, published in Afrikaans as Infanta. It was later translated into English by Leon de Kock.
The novel is set in Cape Town, South Africa, and revolves around three central characters: Ben Geldenhuys, a recovering alcoholic police detective haunted by his past; Christine Geldenhuys, Ben's adopted daughter, a university student struggling with her own demons; and "Thirteen," a vigilante seeking revenge for the murder of his daughter.
The narrative interweaves the stories of these characters, exploring themes of guilt, redemption, justice, and the complexities of the South African legal system. Ben investigates a series of brutal murders that seem connected, while simultaneously trying to protect Christine from her dangerous lifestyle. Thirteen, meanwhile, seeks his own form of justice outside the law.
Devil's Peak is noted for its gritty realism, its exploration of social issues in post-apartheid South Africa, and its complex characters. The novel has been praised for its fast-paced plot, suspenseful atmosphere, and evocative descriptions of Cape Town. It is part of a series featuring Ben Geldenhuys, though each novel can be read as a standalone story. The book was adapted into a six-part television series in 2023.
