Scofflaw

A scofflaw is a person who habitually violates minor laws or regulations, especially those that are difficult to enforce. The term often carries a connotation of disdain for the law and a belief that it does not apply to them. While a scofflaw's actions may not constitute serious crimes, their repeated flouting of rules can undermine the authority of the law and encourage others to do the same.

The term "scofflaw" originated in the United States during the Prohibition era (1920-1933). In 1924, a wealthy Massachusetts resident, Delcevare King, offered a $200 prize to anyone who could come up with a word to describe those who illegally consumed or sold alcohol. The winning entry was "scofflaw," coined by Henry Irving Dale of Rock Ridge, Connecticut. "Scoff" means to mock or treat with contempt, and "law" refers to the legal system. Therefore, a scofflaw is someone who mocks or treats the law with contempt.

The term's popularity quickly spread, and it has since been used to describe individuals who routinely disregard a variety of minor laws, such as:

• Speeding and other traffic violations
• Jaywalking
• Littering
• Parking violations
• Underage drinking (in some contexts)

The significance of the term "scofflaw" lies in its ability to capture a specific attitude toward the law.
