USS Accomac (APB-49)

The USS Accomac (APB-49) was a Benewah-class barracks ship that served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Vietnam War. Originally designated APL-49, a self-propelled barracks ship, she was redesignated APB-49, a self-propelled barracks ship with repair facilities, on August 1, 1946.

The Accomac provided berthing, messing, and other support services to personnel engaged in various naval operations. These vessels were designed to be mobile support bases, capable of moving to locations where shore facilities were limited or non-existent.

During the Vietnam War, the USS Accomac provided support to U.S. Navy and Marine Corps personnel operating in the Mekong Delta region. She offered a stable and secure environment for sailors and Marines operating in the challenging conditions of riverine warfare. The ship provided living quarters, laundry services, medical facilities, and a galley.

Following her service in Vietnam, the USS Accomac was decommissioned and eventually struck from the Naval Vessel Register. She was later transferred to foreign service.
