2/2nd Field Regiment (Australia)
The 2/2nd Field Regiment was an Australian Army artillery regiment that served during World War II. Raised as part of the Second Australian Imperial Force (2nd AIF) in 1940, it was initially equipped with 25-pounder field guns. The regiment saw action in the Middle East, participating in the Western Desert campaign, including the Siege of Tobruk. Later, it was redeployed to the Pacific theatre following Japan's entry into the war.
In the Pacific, the 2/2nd Field Regiment participated in campaigns in New Guinea, including the fighting around Buna–Gona and later at Aitape–Wewak. Throughout the war, the regiment provided crucial artillery support to infantry units, helping to suppress enemy positions and provide covering fire during attacks.
Following the end of World War II, the 2/2nd Field Regiment was disbanded. Like many 2nd AIF units, its personnel were demobilized and returned to civilian life. While the regiment no longer exists in the active Australian Army, its history is maintained through regimental associations and historical records, preserving the memory of its service during the war.
