Gary Ablett (English footballer)
Gary Ablett (19 November 1965 – 1 January 2012) was an English professional footballer who played as a defender. He is notable for being the only player to have won the FA Cup with both Liverpool and Everton.
Career:
Ablett began his professional career with Liverpool in 1985, making his debut in 1986. He spent seven years at Anfield, during which time he won two league titles (1988, 1990) and the FA Cup (1989). He also featured in the team that won the Charity Shield in 1988 and 1989.
In 1992, Ablett joined Everton, becoming a key part of their defence. He was part of the Everton team that won the FA Cup in 1995, defeating Manchester United in the final. This achievement marked him as the only player to have won the FA Cup with both Merseyside clubs. He also won the Charity Shield with Everton in the same year.
Following his time at Everton, Ablett played for Sheffield United, Birmingham City, and Wycombe Wanderers before retiring from professional football.
Managerial Career:
After retiring as a player, Ablett moved into coaching. He managed Stockport County from 2009 to 2010.
Personal Life and Death:
Ablett was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in July 2010. He died on 1 January 2012, at the age of 46, leaving behind a wife and children. He is remembered as a dedicated player and a respected figure in Merseyside football.
