A23 road
The A23 is a major road in the United Kingdom, running between London and Brighton. It is primarily a single carriageway south of Gatwick Airport, though sections are dual carriageway.
The road is an important route for commuters and leisure travellers connecting London with the south coast. It passes through several towns and villages, including Croydon, Redhill, Crawley, and Burgess Hill.
Historically, the A23 largely followed the route of the Roman road Stane Street. Modern improvements have altered the course in places, but the general alignment remains.
Traffic congestion is a common issue on the A23, particularly during peak hours and holiday periods. Several proposals have been made over the years to upgrade sections of the road to improve traffic flow, including dualling the remaining single carriageway sections. However, such projects often face environmental and financial challenges.
The A23 is managed by Highways England. Safety concerns and accidents have led to the implementation of various speed limits and traffic calming measures along its length.
