Fort Ward (Washington)

Fort Ward is a former United States Army military installation located on the southwest corner of Bainbridge Island in Washington state. Originally established as a coastal defense fort in the late 19th century to protect Puget Sound, it was later converted into a naval radio station during World War II, becoming a critical intelligence gathering and communications hub.

History:

Construction of Fort Ward began in 1898 as part of the Endicott Program, a nationwide effort to modernize coastal fortifications. The fort's initial purpose was to protect the Bremerton Naval Yard and the approaches to Seattle and other important Puget Sound ports. It was equipped with disappearing guns, emplacements for smaller rapid-fire guns, and underground magazines.

However, by the early 20th century, advancements in naval technology rendered the fort's heavy guns obsolete. Its role shifted, and it was increasingly used for training and support activities.

During World War II, Fort Ward was transformed into Naval Radio Station Bainbridge Island (often referred to as the Fort Ward Naval Radio Station). Its strategic location made it ideal for intercepting Japanese radio transmissions. The station played a significant role in gathering intelligence and breaking enemy codes, contributing significantly to the Allied war effort in the Pacific. Thousands of Navy personnel were stationed at Fort Ward during this period.

Following the war, the naval radio station continued to operate, albeit with a reduced staff. It remained a key communications and intelligence asset throughout the Cold War.

Present Day:

The Fort Ward property was eventually declared surplus by the federal government. In 1960, it was transferred to the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. Today, Fort Ward State Park encompasses 137 acres and offers visitors opportunities for hiking, biking, picnicking, and exploring the historic gun batteries and other remnants of the fort. The park provides stunning views of the Olympic Mountains and the Puget Sound. Visitors can still see the foundations of the gun emplacements, underground bunkers, and other historical structures, offering a glimpse into the fort's past as both a coastal defense installation and a vital naval intelligence center. The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
