Ōme Kaidō

The Ōme Kaidō (青梅街道) is a major road in Tokyo, Japan, running approximately west-northwest from Shinjuku to Ōme. Historically, it was an important route connecting Edo (present-day Tokyo) with the town of Ōme, a significant center for timber and textiles. The Kaidō served as a vital transport artery for goods and people, facilitating trade and travel between the capital and the surrounding regions.

Today, the Ōme Kaidō functions as a major thoroughfare for vehicular traffic, providing access to western Tokyo and beyond. While much of its historical character has been altered by modern development, remnants of its past can still be observed in certain sections. The road's route generally follows that of the original Edo-era highway, although significant widening and improvements have been implemented to accommodate modern traffic volumes. Along the route, one can still find older shops and buildings, providing glimpses into the area's history as a post town along the old highway.

The road is designated as part of Japan National Route 5 and Tokyo Metropolitan Route 4. It passes through several wards and cities, including Shinjuku, Nakano, Suginami, Nerima, and eventually Ōme. It is known for its often congested traffic, particularly during peak hours.
