A Bigger Splash (2015 film)
A Bigger Splash is a 2015 psychological drama film directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ralph Fiennes, and Dakota Johnson. It is loosely based on the 1969 Jacques Deray film La Piscine (The Swimming Pool).
The film follows a famous rock star, Marianne Lane (Swinton), recovering from throat surgery and enjoying a quiet vacation on the Italian island of Pantelleria with her boyfriend, Paul De Smedt (Schoenaerts). Their peaceful retreat is disrupted by the unexpected arrival of Marianne's former lover and record producer, Harry Hawkes (Fiennes), and his daughter, Penelope Lanier (Johnson).
Harry's flamboyant and disruptive presence, coupled with the complicated history between Marianne, Paul, and himself, creates tension and jealousy. The film explores themes of love, desire, jealousy, aging, fame, and the intrusion of the past on the present. As the quartet spends time together, secrets are revealed, and the relationships between them become increasingly strained, leading to a dramatic and tragic climax. The film's title refers to David Hockney's painting of the same name, mirroring the film's themes of surface appearances and hidden depths.
