Paul Cooper (footballer, born 1957)

Paul Cooper (born 10 December 1957 in South Elmsall, Yorkshire) is an English former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper.

Cooper began his career with Birmingham City, joining them as an apprentice in 1974 and turning professional in 1976. He quickly established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper, earning a reputation for his shot-stopping ability and agility. He remained with Birmingham City until 1980, making over 150 league appearances.

In 1980, Cooper transferred to Ipswich Town for a fee of £225,000. At Ipswich, under the management of Bobby Robson, he enjoyed considerable success. He was a key member of the team that won the UEFA Cup in 1981, defeating AZ Alkmaar in the final. He also helped Ipswich finish second in the First Division in 1981 and 1982. Cooper was known for his consistent performances and reliability between the posts.

Cooper left Ipswich Town in 1987, joining Leicester City. He played for Leicester for two seasons before moving to Stockport County in 1989. He later had spells with non-league clubs including Stamford and Bedworth United before retiring from professional football.

After his playing career ended, Cooper worked as a goalkeeping coach, including a period back at Ipswich Town. He has also been involved in football academies and youth development.

Cooper was never capped at senior level for England, but he represented the England Under-21 team.
