George H. Taylor (physician)

George H. Taylor (1821-1896) was an American physician and a pioneer in the field of Swedish Movement Cure, a form of exercise therapy. Taylor, along with his brother Charles Fayette Taylor, introduced and popularized this method in the United States. He believed in treating illness through manual therapy and exercise rather than relying solely on pharmaceuticals or surgery.

Taylor opened his first institution for Movement Cure in New York City in the late 1850s. His practice involved a variety of exercises and manipulations designed to address specific ailments and improve overall health. He developed specialized equipment to aid in these therapeutic movements.

He authored several books and articles on Movement Cure, including "An Exposition of the Swedish Movement Cure" (1860) and "Health by Exercise" (1869), which detailed his theories and techniques. These publications contributed significantly to the dissemination and acceptance of Movement Cure as a legitimate form of medical treatment in the 19th century. While largely superseded by modern physical therapy, Taylor's work represents an important chapter in the history of alternative and complementary medicine in America.
